The Crew

"Testimonies of devotion"

The crew's size and jobs have changed considerably over the years as equipment has modernized. A summer crew 30 years ago was twice the size as it is now.

As summer approaches and school lets out, working at the cemetery has often been the first job for many. However, not everyone is that young: "Skeet" worked up until just a few years ago and was in his 80s!

Of special note is the late Phil Farrell, serving from 1988-2013 as assistant caretaker (see photo below). He was an instrumental worker who brought special skills and know-how to the cemetery that were essential in many accomplishments.

However, they weren't all such good employees. The cemetery minutes from 4/1/1904 state: Superintendent recommends that Secretary "get the money and pay each man (on pay day) for good time is lost and besides men get too much whiskey which incapacitates them for rest of day"

A Special Thanks

Many thanks to Daryl Vogan, oldest son of previous Superintendent Jim Vogan pictured at left center alongside Patrick and Seth Groover. Daryl has volunteered countless hours building this website, archiving information, organizing documents and digitizing records. It is a vital step in protecting the history of Greendale Cemetery.

A special thanks to Patrick Groover also for his time and work on this website.
